Stacy Keibler was frequently shown flirting and 'making out' with him in backstage segments, until Stephanie McMahon became general manager of the SmackDown! brand. Dawn Marie made her debut on SmackDown! as Vince's legal assistant, who competed with Stacy Keibler for McMahon's affections.

At the year-ending WTA Tour Championships, Serena Williams saved eight match points before defeating Capriati in the semifinals. She then won the final by default when Lindsay Davenport withdrew.

Serena Williams finished the year at World No. 6 for the second straight year.
